On September 23th, from 19:00 to 20:30, Prof. Hu Wei delivered an enriching lecture on the theme of “Building the Post-Mortem World” in the lecture hall on the first floor of the library. In this lecture, Prof. Hu mainly took murals from the tombs in ancient Egypt, region of Tigris and Euphrates, the pre-Qin period and the Han Dynasty as examples, to compare and analyze them from five aspects, including the "continuation" of the past, the image of the deceased, the space and artistic means of the post-mortem world and the foreign cultural elements. Prof. Hu pointed out that the creation of the post-mortem world was a very important theme in ancient Chinese art, which was inextricably linked with water. In ancient times, although people entered “other world” after death, the world was not completely disconnected from life, nor was it a new beginning. The ancients showed the transformation from the real world to the “post-mortem world” by painting the image of the remains of the funeral and the image after entering the post-mortem world. The ways to show the post-mortem world were divided into two major methods: realism and symbolism. Through many examples, Mr. Hu proved that in the construction of the tomb and the creation of the post-mortem world, there were also many symbolizes of foreign cultural elements. At the end of the lecture, Prof. Hu re-emphasized the importance of the world after death, which is not only reflected in the level of life and survival, but also in the development of art history. He did hope that the students could learn and think about the theme of human common art and the artistic characteristics of the East and West. |
