Review of Experience Lesson in Wen Xuetang— Dunhuang Grotto Art

On October 11th, Wen Xuetang organized the experience lesson of Dunhuang Grotto Art for the students in No.1 High School, No.2 Middle School, Qiyi High School, Shanghai Cunzhi School and other schools that are affiliated to Tongji University. This lesson was divided into four sessions, each took about forty minutes.

The experience lesson was divided into two parts. The first part was that the teacher introduced to the students about some basic knowledge of Dunhuang Grottoes. The teacher used lots of pictures to explain to the students why the Dunhuang Mogao Grottoes were called "the art museum in the desert" and "the museum on the wall", and help the students to enjoy the landscape paintings, figure paintings and “Apsaras flying through a tower ” in Dunhuang murals, as well as costumes, architecture, furniture, folk custom, music, dance, animals and the like. Also, related books and websites were recommended for further reading. During the second part, the students took part in the “hand-drawn Dunhuang” activity. The teachers and volunteers of Wen Xuetang prepared colored pencils and line drawings of Dunhuang murals for the students, of which the styles included Apsaras flying through a tower, Portraits of cave donors and other patterns. The students actively exerted their creativity and imagination to fill in the rich and colorful colors of the line drawings.

In the end, most of the students completed their works in the limited time and received a variety of awards from Wen Xuetang. The teacher hoped that the students would learn more about Dunhuang's cultural heritages and enjoy the magic of them through such experience. This kind of activitis are helpful in stimulating interests and enthusiasm to understand and create beauty.
